Well, before you read this let me tell that I am not a very good writer. I always thought about this particular question and here is it.

I will try to put a logical argument in favour of women to choose a men earning higher than them. You have to be an average mathematics student to follow this argument.
Talking about salaries, Data extracted from a matrimonial site ( can’t mention it here) shows that approx. 89% of prospective grooms are employed and the similar number for women is slightly lower at 65% . So 11% men and 35% women do not have a job while looking for their future life partner. Now, if one tries to match women with men basis on their salaries, out of those 35% jobless women , 24% will marry a working man because there are no jobless men left for them. Here is the catch. There is already a match-making done of 24% working men with 24% non working women. Now, coming to higher salary brackets, men earning more than 4 lpa is around 45% compared to 27% for women. 17% men earn more than 10 lpa compared to 9% for women. 5% men earn more than 20 lpa compared to 2% for women. So there are very less women, for men to choose, earning equal or higher than them. And, there are lot more men, for women to choose, earning equal or higher than them.

So, there is no logical reason for a woman to choose a guy earning lesser than her because that’s where the current equilibrium of economic status matching lie at. Of course, with more opportunities in future , more women will take up jobs and this economic status matching will be more balanced and not be tilted towards a particular gender.

One possible reason for a woman to choose a guy earning lesser than her might be love, which is not logical. So, if you are earning lesser than a woman and if she still chose you, be 100% sure that she loves you.
